I'm Ethan Hansen, a veteran visual designer & artist creating resilient, thoughtful design systems with comprehensive vertical brand awareness.
For 15 years I've leveraged a wide set of design skills for a wide variety of organizations in several industries; from NGOs and NPOs to startups to higher ed to multinational enterprises creating household-name brands.
In 2008 I founded the independent art & design studio Hansen House, collaborating with hundreds of wonderful clients in organizations on every continent to create beautiful, ethical, and enduring brands. In 2003 I chose to sunset HHDS to bring my full attention to bear on UI/UX design with the incredible FE team at TTI working on Ryobi, Ridgid, and Hart consumer power equipment.
My curiosity is a powerful motivator to keep pace with contemporary research & tech and to constantly acquire new skills. As a result, I've had the privilege to work in: film & TV VFX, architectural visualization, print advertising, marketing, frontend dev, enterprise software dev, video game dev, RPA, UI/UX, ITIS, and academic publishing.
My formal education includes a four-year Graphic Design B.F.A. with honors (BJU Greenville SC, US) and thousands of hours of craft training. In 2019 I embarked on a doctoral track (bi-directional influence of theological systems and religious structures in North America) before the COVID-19 pandemic made international travel untenable. While working in the commercial sector, my thesis research continues at an unhurried pace until such time as I may return fully to academia.
When not designing, I volunteer in advocacy for survivors of religious abuse, contribute to open-source software, write literary commentary, and read extensively. In 2024 I will complete my decade-long project to read 1,000 books (avg. 100/yr).
Currently writing:
Untitled dissertation — On the bi-directional influence of theology and religious structures.
The Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court: Sociopolitical Commentary and Science Fiction in the 19th Century — Literary-historical commentary on Twain’s genre-bending novel. This is a long-term research project estimated to be published in 2030.
